Let's investigate what constitutes a perfect "sales resume."
The first step is to list your achievements and contributions at the beginning of the resume. You want to focus the results you achieved for your previous employers (implicitly linking them to what you will do for your prospective employer).
In the career summary section highlight your sales skills and the value those skills will provide to your new employer. Focus on your industry knowledge and expertise.
Your sales resume should contain a track record of your sales records and achievements. Focus on areas you were responsible for such as supervising, management, budgeting, and territory. Again, list your top achievements.
Be careful in your description of sales targets, specific dollar amounts, and any other information that could be considered proprietary information of your previous employer. This data is typically trade secret material and should be kept confidential.
You can focus on your contribution to the company from your sales experience... any percentages of increasing revenue as a result of your efforts, how you met or exceeded quotas, any awards were honors that were given to you, and how you rescued or reestablished relationships that were on the downswing.
Many organizations are hiring new sales staff because of a product launch. If you have experience with product launches be sure to emphasize that.
Other key points:
- Have you attended any sales training programs?
- How do you handle objections?
- Have you ever engaged in contract negotiations that led to a successful closure?
- Do you negotiate with vendors for suppliers?
- Have you participated in any committees or boards?
